DIY Project: BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS The Final Post

I am both happy and sad to report that the DIY project assigned by my APEL class is finally coming to an end. And as all ends require, I need to explain how my project went. So my faithful readers who were expecting another one of my strange posts, please wait for next week. This week is a post on how my DIY Project went overall.

The Project (The Idea and the Goal)
I have mentioned that I originally had multiple ideas planned out and had to choose one. In the end I chose the idea that I believed had an element from all the other project options I came up with. As a result, the DIY Project that I began to work on was to set up a donation box for books and donate those books to public libraries. The original goal was to successfully raise a large amount of children books, since those books are likely to be made to last and are the ones both parents and teens are willing to give away (Parents and teens most likely NO LONGER READ children books, so its easier to donate). As a result there would be plenty of new or clean books for the library to put onto shelves or to give to kids who don’t have books at home to read.

Books

The Project Plan
As with all great and successful projects or ideas, they start with a plan. Can be either a good plan or a bad plan, but in this case it was a simple plan. The first thing I had to do was to obtain permission to have the box for donations allowed in our school library. I originally thought I had to take it all the way to the principals office for permission, but decided to go with asking the librarian. I would then go and create the donation box and set it up. Every week, books would be collected and by the end of the project, all the books would be donated at once.

The Project Result
The result of the project is actually on the fence I believe. For the donation box, in the beginning it wasn’t much of a success. 2 months went by with only 3 books, and at first I had no idea what was wrong with it. My teacher, Mr. Theriault finally recommended me to donate some books of my own first. You know…to make it seems like others were donating too (make a fake trend). Thankfully after that was done, books began coming in more frequently and in higher numbers. At the end, the donation box became a good success and all thanks to my brilliant AP English teacher, Mr. Theriault.

Books

Then came the donating portion of the books. The librarian I originally talked to said that me donating books to them was something they would gladly accept, but that was pretty early in the school year. As a result, the time for me to actually bring a lot of the books in, they could only take half and put it into the shelves. One reason was the condition of some of the books and the other reason is because the excess of some of the books (like Harry Potter). As a result, they recommended that some of the books would be placed into the library store, where they will be sold for 1 dollar or less. I accepted this solution, since this way children don’t have to return books to the library and actual purchase their own books at a much lower price at which it would be bought at a bookstore like Barnes and Noble. (Here is a picture of where the books will be going)

Success or Failure?
So in the end…I would honestly say that the project was a success. I succeed in creating a decorative donation box. My project received permission from the school library to set up the donation box and received free advertisement by the librarian who checked books out. The donation box receive many donated books, most of which were children books (the sought after object). And finally the library was able to use some of the books I obtained from the project. Sure, some of the books were placed in the store but it also helped with the original goal, donating books for children to be able to read and enjoy. The store made the books much cheaper and the children could actually keep the books instead of just borrowing them for a few day and having to return it later. This way, the children can actually keep the books and have books to read anytime they wanted. I believe my project worked out in the end.

P.S. Sadly the librarians did not feel comfortable with me taking pictures of them taking the books or having regular people checking books out due to privacy issues and possibly sue for not getting permission, so I could not take many pictures. Thankfully they allowed me to take pictures of the library store.

AP English Books: Always Depressing

My AP English class had just recently finished reading the novel 1984, an assigned reading for both in of and out of class. Let me tell you, this was one of the best books that I read in any English class. It was both easier to read than other novels like Shakespeare since it was written in 1900s (thank god for that) and an enjoyable read since it had sci-fi and suspense. *SPOILER* *SPOILER* *SPOILER* As I reached the final part of the book, I was disappointed to read that not only has the protagonist fallen to the will of Big Brother, but his relationship with Julia will forever be damaged and their love for each other broken. It was then where I both cursed the reading requirements of AP classes and realized that almost all AP English class books had one thing in common. They are all DEPRESSING.

fav-book-sucks-1984

Don’t agree with me? The books in my English classes had me read were all pretty depressing. An example would be Othello. What was a book about a best friend tricking you and lying to you becomes a husband killing his wife in jealousy and then finding out she was always faithful, finding out you killed her and didn’t give her one day to live after begging…and if you had waited you would have seen she was innocent. FAN-FU**ING-TASTIC! Are you freaken kidding me? This is the type of book you want people to read? Made me want to throw the book at my friend next to me when he laughed!

Not enough proof you say? Another novel I was forced to read in my AP English classes is The Jungle. Now if you had read it before, you would know this story is all about disappointments and depressing news. First they bought a home that is literally sucking their savings down a tube, bring all sorts of problems with having the money to support themselves. Next, the protagonist finds out that his wife has been blackmailed into sleeping with the boss and he is then fired after confronting the man. Sounds absolutely happy right? And then we find out after a trip in the country side, he comes back and works which is good right? Helping support the rest of his relative and his only son. ONLY TO FIND OUT HIS SON DIES IN THE STREET FROM DROWNING! I mean come on! Is this guy’s life all about how hellish it is?!

The Jungle

Get it yet? Almost all the books that the AP English classes made us read, have all had one thing in common. Almost always having a bit of hope in the beginning and then crushing it under its little dirty pages. I am honestly anticipating how horrifying the next book have to read will be like. That way next time those novels literally throw in more tragedy, at least I would have hardened my heart enough to take it.

Humans: The Natural Disaster

I will start off with some shocking news that gave me the inspiration to write this post today! In the last week, two earthquakes hit my city, both were above the 3.0 Richter Scale line. Each was powerful enough to cause the city to move, not to mention shake my house! …But I honestly did not think that it was important enough to do more than be a hilarious update in on my friends Facebook page. Imagine my surprise when I found the story on the news the very next day. I began to question why these stations are willing to report the two earthquakes, even though they did not do much (if any) harm. Maybe it was just a slow news day? I played it off, while thinking how similar it was similar to news like how one of the Kardashians being married or some other non-newsworthy report that was able to be passed off as “news”. Then heard about the 8.0 earthquake in Chile…That was a true newsworthy article, as not only was it a powerful earthquake that collapsed homes and killed people, but it also resulted in a tsunami to form. Again, I could not help but compare this destruction to something that humans have done. That day, I realized how much the human species was to natural disasters and their results.

derweze-known-door-hell_worst-man-made-disasters

The human species has resided in this earth about a minute, if compared to a clock that is the total time the Earth had been in existence. In that minute of existence, humans brought upon much change as all other occurrences throughout the time periods. Humans, like natural disasters, are capable of unbelievable amounts of damage…yet are also capable of doing little. For instance, humans can be in the activity of cutting trees down in a pattern. The result is growth of younger trees due to the extra source of sun light, and the little displacement of animal homes. However, humans are also capable of damages unseen before…like the atomic bombs dropped during WWII. The deaths and destruction was like having the epicenter of a large tornado and earthquake occur right where the bombs were dropped. Both humans and natural disasters are capable of untold amounts of harm.

h29_19773763

Now the similarities based on news. The result of human activities, large or small, are always reported on the news. From the revolution of a country to a report on the activities of the Justin Bieber, it seems that all activities of humans can be seen on TV. All these news seem to be more dramatized then they actually are. It’s just like how the news reports disasters. From the small earthquake felt in my city to the devastating results of Hurricane Katrina, all news based on Natural Disasters are reported in a dramatic flare.

In the end, after viewing the reports from the news station, I recognized similarities in reports and destruction. Maybe its because I am not ignorant to how devastating my species is, or maybe I’m just overly depressed about my species…but I could not help but notice how alike the human species is to natural disasters, both on the destructive results and how we hear about them.

Importance of Comedy

Comedy is a genre with a large amount versatile and variety in its history. Why? The reason is the idea of comedy and/or “funnies” are all based on the opinion of the beholder. Each person has an idea of what is funny and what is not for themselves, and while often times people can share the idea of what is humorous, there will be times when it will differentiate. Even though comedy can be found almost everywhere today, not many know humor and laughter are actually very important in our lives. How you may ask? READ THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS TO FIND OUT! 😀

Comedy actually provides laughter or just lighter feelings among the people who come into contact with it. Through movies, stand-up comedy, novels, and other artistic forms. There are many different types of comedy as well, dealing with cartoon characters hurting themselves, making fun of everyday life, or mistakes that seem hilarious to others (since it didn’t happen to them). Comedy is very versatile, not set in stone or contained into a single guideline.
Comedy Tom and Jerry

We all know that life is full of hardship and many times sadness. Many times it also adds a lot of pain, just for the kick of it. What I am trying to say, life can be a jerk, and as a result sometimes it is hard to remain cheerful. If the stress, pain, or sadness continue to build without stop it can result in increased suicide rates in cities, like Seattle (due to constant cloudy and rainy weather). This is where comedy comes in. Laughter is proven to lower stress levels and blood pressure and since comedy can provide laughter or lighter feelings, it can often times help out in times of stress or turmoil in our lives.

Comedy also has an important part in the artistic side of life. Each person has their own sense of humor, as a result comedians who work side by side with humor to produce the most efficient results create “art”. For instance the comedic art of humor through pain, like the television show the Three Stooges or even Tom and Jerry. Comedy provided new ideas and styles of humor that today needs for television, novels, and overall in art.
Comedy Three Stooges
In the end, comedy has a part in all our lives and has a part in our overall health. Without comedy, many people today might have died due to stress built up from work or the horrible occurrences in life. We all need those cheerful light moments in our lives…much more than we think we do.

Human and the Good

Hello Friendly Viewers~! Its time I wrote another blog post for you guys to enjoy, and this time I hope to make it a bit more optimistic than my past posts. So a previous post was based on the evils humans are willing to commit, and while there are bound to have agreements, a viewer recommended I also put into account the positives that humans are capable of and not just the evils. Thus for this post I plan on making it mostly about humans and their ability to do good.
Helpful
While true that humans can be selfish, I mean just look at most of our government officials and corporate fat cats, there is still some generosity that can be found in our lives. The homeless, the percentage of homeless make a small percentage of the United States, but are steadily growing due to lack of jobs and population growth for the last few decades (with innovation). For homeless begging in the street humans will at times give change, but that isn’t enough. However, there are some great people who will have those homeless people join them for a meal and present more than a bit of pocket change or even just treat the homeless as people. Those people are the ones that are truly good people. Of the homeless, there are actually families with children that cannot afford to buy something decent to eat. As a result, schools and religious groups will hold fundraisers to raise food or toys for these families.

While there is lots of other good things that humans have done, like care for the environment and animals (after other humans have literally destroyed those environments and killed a lot of those animals), the main purpose of this article is to basically say we humans aren’t too bad. Even if we do tend to be destructive and can often times fall to the glories of evil, we aren’t actually that bad.

Living with Greed

I would like to start off the post by saying sorry to those waiting for the actual post of “Women and Feminism”. So far I have not had the motivation I originally had to write the post. It should come out later on but don’t expect it out really soon. Anyways back to the actual post.

Greed. A single characteristic that we have been taught to condemned and to avoid since an early age, starting with not being greedy and sharing your toys (which I was never willing to learn). As we grew, we were encouraged to avoid being greedy whether with our food, our possessions, or our money. It seems there is a continuous list of what we shouldn’t be greedy with, because it’s “bad” and “mean”. Other people believe that greed is a wonderful thing to have in communities because it has some positive side effects, like being greedy for knowledge has the possibility of new discoveries.
Good_versus_Evil_Greed
Most people condemn or agree before they know all the facts about greed. This post is meant to give both pros and cons of greed, and give the people enough information for an educated decision. Please note that I may not put EVERY LAST DETAIL into pros and cons. The viewers are welcome to provide information or disagree in the comments section (please do so RESPECTFULLY and do NOT be RUDE).

The idea of being greedy is bad has been implanted into us by our parents and teachers early in our childhood. So why is it considered such an awful trait by so many people? I believe some of the fear of greed comes from occurrences related to greed. There has been times where greed has made another human being injure or maim another for possessions or objects with value. Thus the fear of young children or anyone becoming violent due to greed, makes the characteristic of being greedy one of the most shunned. The feeling of pity is another reason why greed can often be disliked. In terms of income, some workers barely make enough to survive…while company executives or managers make hundreds of thousands a year and give themselves pay-raises. Thus we picture those executives as greedy and want them to give the money to those who need it. As a result, people consider being “greedy” is a bad thing. In some cases it is.
greed bad
Another view point towards the characteristic is, “What’s wrong with being greedy? It is reasonable or necessary in life”. People have told us “don’t be greedy, it’s important to share”. Let’s put that policy into the business world then. Without greed, there would be no improvements. Why? Picture it this way. Lets say on one hand, a company pays all employees the same. All work hours, all products, all responsibilities get the same pay regardless. As a result there is no motivation to do anything well, after all, if people “share” all money equally or never get a raise what is the point of working hard? With greed, people will work harder in companies and innovation in order to get that chance of selling more for money or getting a raise. The reward and the greedy desire for that reward is what drives our economy. In this case it is actually good.
greed good
In the end, it is your opinion if greed is good or evil. Like I said earlier, if you guys think I missed anything or should include anything, please comment at the bottom. Or if you disagree and want to tell me why, please comment on the bottom as well…just please be mature and respectable. I will take into consideration on what you guys say. No one pays attention to rude comments.

Humankind less humane than animals?

Man-kind. Currently the species with the largest population and possibly since the beginning of the mammal age. If we look closely at the human race, it is noticeable that we humans have no superior physical qualities that has made us the “superior” species. The only factor that has raised humans up to the tip of the food chain, is our ability to think (self-consciousness) and create. Those elements are what make us human…but these traits are twisted to the point we become worse than animals.

One thing we humans pride ourselves on is our brain power and abilities to create new items, it is what makes our species so special. Humans are the only mammals to create such complex tools, from the common can opener to the ingenious internet. These inventions and innovations are solely found in the human race, as all other animals are only capable of less. However, the end result on what is invented and if it for the good of the people or not, depends on the creator. How are we humans sometimes less human than animals? Think about it. We humans have developed so many different types of weapons, in an effort to exterminate each other more effectively than the previous way. From spears to arrows to gun to missile launchers to bombs/bombers, it goes on and on. Weapons continue to develop to make the most efficient way to kill mass numbers with a single object. No other animal in our world kills their own species as much as we do! In order to obtain more land in the past, we humans have killed each other for territory. We have dropped nuclear bombs to win wars. While there is always a reason, it is still not a good thing.
Weapons evolution
Want more proof? Torture. Think about it. Torture did not just suddenly exist on our planet and no other animal really practices it either. I thing it is reasonable to say we, the human species, are the ones to develop/come up with torture. The act of inflicting as much physical or mental harm to another being in order to get information (or our own satisfaction) is cruel beyond belief. Criminals, government officials, and police forces around the world commit this heinous action, in secrecy or announce it to the public. One noticeable time period where torture was used most was during WWII, the Nazi’s killed and tortured millions of Jews, all because they had a different religion. During the dynasty period of china there were tortures such as finger crackers, where prisoners had there fingers put between iron rods and stringers were pulled so the iron rods would close together till the bones would break. Our history is full of with the creation of new and worse ways to harm each other.
Water Torture
While we humans have done some good for the people and the environment and it can be seen as “good” and “kind”, we humans have done as much wrong. In the end it is hard to tell if we humans are as grand as we seem.

Steps for a path to Success in obtaining boxes of books

My innovation project, while started pretty slow, seems to be doing well currently. In fact I might be combining my efforts with a fellow student, Casey Cho, to provide material for his project as well. But since this project I was doing was AMAZING~…to me anyway… I decided to tell you guys the steps I took to make my project. … OK FINE my teacher wants us to explain the steps we took for our project so far =__= But I am taking the effort to tell you so listen up!

Step 1: PLANNING
The start of a complex project and an effort to complete it on time always starts with a schedule or at least a written plan. In this case, Mr.Theriault gave the class (including me) a chance to plan our innovation project ahead of time on a ideaFM powerpoint. Of course this was the barest plan and not very accurate due to it just being deadlines to follow.
ideaFM plan

While I was able to set deadlines for myself, I still needed a way to get books donated to me. I needed a way where people can just donate it with me standing there looking like a creeper and waiting, so I began drawing out diagrams and possible options. Eventually I came up with a donation box, with a lid that can be opened to retrieve books from. Here is the sketch I made early on. A little messy yes but gets the job done.
IMG_7305

Step 2: GETTING SUPPLIES
Once I finished with the easiest part of the process, I had to move on to the next step…gathering materials. Normally this shouldn’t be that hard, getting a box large enough for some books and a flap to cover the top. The thing is, I wanted it so that the flap would be able to fit snuggly into the top of the box, have it easy to open the flap, and still leave enough space to just slide books in(I’m fickle like that-leave me alone). My success in finding the perfect box and cover took me longer than I expected…way too long. Even then, the flap I am using doesn’t cover the top of the box entirely, leaving a small slip. I plan on just using it as a way for people to slip their books in without having to open the flap. Luckily I have crayons, markers, and pens/pencils at home so I had that covered.
IMG_7287

Step 3: HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
I would like to say I was on a roll and started my project the second I got the materials…but then I would be lying. It took me a bit of time, but eventually I was motivated enough to start wrapping the box what white poster paper. The reason for this was I wanted the box to be perfectly white, allowing me to easily start drawing and decorating without previous pictures or logos to hinder me. The process took lots of glue dots…it was annoying and slow but eventually I was able to finally place the white construction paper on and it looked clean.
IMG_7290

Step 4: Drawing a Master Piece
Finally I began to draw, and at first I didn’t know what to draw. It took me a few minutes, but since my project was based on books and children, I decided to draw books. Naturally since I am a guy, the first few sketches on the box was…horrifying to say the least. After half an hour of work, I finally drew what seemed like cute books (in my mind anyways).
IMG_7295
IMG_7300

Step 5: Coloring the Cartoon
My last step in decorating the box that I have put much effort into making was coloring. In order to make it stand out, I decided to make most of the words different but bright colors. Hopefully it will draw attention to the words and get the message across… that I WANT SOME DONATED BOOKS PEOPLE~! In the picture the box isn’t fully colored but I that is due to me trying to decide what is the best colors to continue with. I don’t want this box to look like a kindergartener went wild with color without knowing what color matches with what.
IMG_7302

What I plan on doing next now is completing the beautiful cartoons I made, and finally setting it on its way. Hopefully I get more books besides the ones already donated to me (THANKS COUSIN AND FRIENDS WHO ARE READING THIS THAT DONATED BOOKS) and letting Casey include it in his book exchange innovation idea. I might still give some to schools or libraries that but I already gave some.
IMG_7306
If you guys are more interested in the progress of my innovation project or want to know more about where the box will be located, it will be posted on this blog as soon as it is out. In addition if you have any tips or ideas you would like to share please comment.

And finally for those who are doing a project that requires similar work to mine, please make sure you have most of the material before hand (not looking around like me) and start on it a bit at least when you gather all the materials. Boxes can be found in Costco easily and can be bought at office stores so its a good idea to look around for the best one.
THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS AND HAVE A NICE DAY~!

Books for the Box: PROGRESS

Last time I wrote on my blog about my APEL project it was still just the planning out and letting you guys know it will be coming soon. The progress on completing the boxes are close to done, though I still need to finish coloring them. While it seems that much hasn’t been done, I do have good news! I have made some progress on obtain some books! Ironically I got books before I even put the boxes out there in public…kind of sad in fact…
Box Dec
Anyways! I was able to obtain some donations from a few of my friends and relatives early and have some from my own shelf. There are some chapter books, but I was able to obtain some of those Ripley’s Believe it or Not style books too (that contain interesting facts and kids love). For the most part I can do the first donation soon and afterwards set out the book donation boxes at our school library and hopefully class. Keep an eye out people!

Frankenstein! The Monster

We have just started a new novel in my APEL (AP English Literature) class, and its Frankenstein! I am so excited for this novel, due to this book being one of the first mix between science fiction and horror. Now, since the creation of Frankenstein the novel readers and critics always reference it as an amazing book. Due to its popularity, people have even made scary urban legends about Frankenstein’s Creature. They even made facts just in case you meet Frankenstein’s creature, since it won’t die of old age and last time it was seen was when it left. Here is what most say:
Frankenstein’s Monster
Unbelievably Tall
Impervious to gunshot damage
As long as you don’t try to hurt it, it will leave you alone
Wound with fire
Last scene leaving Frankenstein’s Castle

The total amount of influence one book from the 1800s gave birth to an urban legend. It shows how much the influence of books and our minds can lead to new thrills and monsters. I can’t wait to actually read the novel and see how the actual monster stacks up to its legend.
